Summer Skin Care Tips from Idalis Bailey

Happy summer! As the temperature rises and we spend more time outdoors, it’s essential to adjust our skincare routine to keep our skin healthy and glowing. I’m Idalis Bailey, CEO of Renew Esthetics and an expert in skincare, and I’m excited to share some tips to help you maintain your skin’s radiance throughout the summer months.

Summer brings with it a host of joys – beach trips, barbecues, and long days in the sun. However, the increased exposure to the elements can take a toll on our skin. To ensure you keep your skin looking its best, it’s crucial to tweak your skincare routine to address the specific challenges posed by the warmer weather. Here are my top ten tips for maintaining healthy, radiant skin all summer long.

Stay Hydrated:

Hydration is key! Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Dehydration can make your skin appear dull and can lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. To combat this, incorporate hydrating serums and moisturizers into your routine to lock in moisture and prevent dryness. Consider products containing hyaluronic acid, which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, providing intense hydration.

Protect with SPF:

Never skip sunscreen! Use a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 every day, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. Sunscreen helps prevent sunburn, premature aging, and reduces the risk of skin cancer. For those with sensitive skin, look for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Exfoliate Gently:

Exfoliation is important to remove dead skin cells and promote a healthy glow. Opt for a gentle exfoliant to avoid irritating your skin. Exfoliate 1-2 times a week to keep your skin smooth and fresh. Over-exfoliation can strip the skin of its natural oils, so it’s crucial to be gentle. Products with mild exfoliants like lactic acid or fruit enzymes are excellent choices.

Wear Protective Clothing:

In addition to sunscreen, wear protective clothing such as wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and lightweight, long-sleeved shirts. These provide extra protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) clothing is an excellent investment for those who spend a lot of time outdoors.

Avoid Peak Sun Hours:

The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Try to stay in the shade or indoors during these hours to minimize sun exposure. If you need to be outside, make sure to take extra precautions by wearing protective gear and applying a high-SPF sunscreen.

Soothe Sunburns:

If you do get sunburned, act quickly to soothe your skin. Apply aloe vera or a cooling gel, drink plenty of water, and avoid further sun exposure until your skin heals. Aloe vera has natural anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce redness and irritation. Avoid using heavy creams or oils on sunburned skin as they can trap heat and make the burn worse.

Adjust Your Skincare Routine:

Switch to lighter skincare products for the summer. Heavy creams can feel greasy in the heat, so opt for lighter, water-based formulations. Don’t forget to cleanse your skin twice a day to remove sweat, oil, and impurities. Look for non-comedogenic products that won’t clog your pores and lead to breakouts.

Eat a Skin-Friendly Diet:

Consume a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Foods high in antioxidants, like berries and leafy greens, help protect your skin from damage and keep it looking youthful. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and flaxseed can also help maintain your skin’s natural barrier and hydration.

Be Mindful of Chlorine and Saltwater:

Both chlorine and saltwater can be harsh on your skin. Rinse off thoroughly after swimming and apply a moisturizer to prevent dryness and irritation. Chlorine can strip the skin of its natural oils, while saltwater can have a dehydrating effect. Using a gentle, hydrating body wash post-swim can help mitigate these effects.

Pamper Your Skin:

Treat yourself to professional skincare treatments like facials and laser treatments. At Renew Esthetics, we offer a variety of services to help you achieve your best summer skin. Professional treatments can address specific concerns like hyperpigmentation, acne, and fine lines, giving you a more radiant complexion.
